Biografia
Carmela Gross was born in São Paulo, SP, in 1946. She received a BA in Arts from the Fundação Álvares Penteado in 1969, an MA in Arts (1981), and a Ph.D. in Arts (1987), both from the Escola de Comunicação e Artes at the Universidade de São Paulo, where she has been teaching since 1972. She was awarded a Vitae Foundation Fellowship (1991) and an Artist in Residence grant to produce work at the European Ceramics Work Center, s'Hertogenbosh, Holland (1994) where she had her exhibition Facas, (Knives). This show later traveled to both Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro and the Museu de Are Moderna de São Paulo. She has also produced costumes and choreography for opera and theatre. She has been exhibiting since 1967, taking part in several Biennials of São Paulo between the years 1967 and 2002; and in important group exhibitions such as Latinoamérica Presente, Museo de Bellas Artes de Santiago, Chile (1990); Latin-American Drawings Today, San Diego Museum of Art, USA (1990); and RE-Aligning Vision, Alternative Currents in South America, Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery, The University of Texas, USA / Museo del Barrio, NY, USA (1997). Her first solo exhibition was in 1977 at the Gabinete de Arte Raquel Arnaud, São Paulo, that represents her work since then, and where she also exhibited her most recent exhibition Hotel, in 2003. She lives and works in São Paulo.
